The
Field: Esthetics, the non-medical care of the skin, is a
growing part of the health and beauty industry. As the
industry matures, the need for highly trained and
knowledgeable professionals is at an all-time high.
The Job:
Estheticians work in a wide range of businesses, from day
spas and salons: to cruise ships and destination resorts.
The practices of dermatologists and plastic surgeons are
other exciting areas for a skin care specialist to put his
or her talents and abilities to work. Estheticians advise
and instruct clients about makeup application techniques,
perform simple extractions to remove blackheads and provide
facials, among other skin, hair and nail services.
Skills:
Budding estheticians "should be calm, caring, and flexible,"
says Annette Hanson, founder of Atelier Esthetique, a New
York State-licensed esthetics school. Estheticians are
usually good with their hands and have a desire to make
people feel better about themselves. The esthetician's
fingers should convey strength, trust, and knowledge.
Training:
To become an esthetician in the State of New York, you must
be licensed. Atelier Esthetique offers a 600-hour, hands-on,
license program which prepares students for the state exam.
Core courses include facial care, makeup application and
waxing; evening and weekend schedules are offered.
Salary:
Earnings will depend on location, quality of salon, your
training, skills, and reliability. In the metro area,
salaries can start "at $35K plus commissions and gratuities
per year," says Hanson. "A good esthetician can earn as much
as $100K a year." Some places will have benefits, but not
all.
Upside:
This is a career that is nurturing, pays well and has a
variety of movement. You can launch an esthetic department
in an existing salon, take over an experience person's
clientele, or start your own clientele in a place which is
expanding. A perk for the public: Most schools like Atelier
Esthetique offer clinics in which hour-long facials
performed by graduating students cost $25 to $50.

Waxing Specialist Licensure - 75 Hour Licensure Course
